Transcreation – localising the message behind your brand

Brands vie for attention in reaching the target audience. Imagine you have recently run a successful sales campaign in Macedonia, and you would like to repeat that for other markets. It usually takes good transcreation to carry your message out to consumers in all the world’s markets.

Advertising messages often contain a subtext that needs to be decoded correctly by the audience in the target market. The art of transcreation involves adapting the message your brand conveys while keeping your brand identity intact in every local market. Translators often take a more liberal and creative approach to this kind of job, as the texts – and visuals in many cases – need to be adapted for your message to hit the mark in an intercultural context.

Transcreation plays an essential role in successful intercultural advertising, communication and product marketing, as it ensures that the message is conveyed as intended to the target audience in each market.

The Macedonian language – characteristics and spread

Linguists group Macedonian together with Bulgarian into the eastern group of the South Slavic languages, which diverge from the western group and partly from the other Slavic languages in a number of characteristics.

The great similarity to Bulgarian led many to hold that Macedonian was not a language in its own right, but a Bulgarian dialect without any independent literary Macedonian language; this approach is still widely followed in Bulgaria. In contrast, many Macedonians emphasise that Old Church Slavonic or Old Bulgarian originated in their region more than 1,000 years ago. These arguments have been used in competing territorial claims from Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.

Macedonian is spoken as a native language by about two million people, and most speakers consider themselves to be members of the Macedonian people. Almost 1.4 million of these speakers live in Macedonia, where it is the official language.

Smaller groups live in Albania, Bulgaria and Greece; the exact numbers are disputed due to classification problems and lack of accurate statistics. Linguists from the Republic of Macedonia classify the south-eastern Slavic varieties spoken in south-western Bulgaria as Macedonian, whereas linguists from Bulgaria, where Bulgarian is the standard language, classify the same varieties as Bulgarian. In the north-western part of Greek Macedonia has a minority that speaks the south-eastern Slavic varieties, which many Slavicists classify as Macedonian whereas others classify them as Bulgarian dialects. Macedonian standard language is unusual here, making them unattributable external dialects usually simply referred to as Slavic or as Slavo-Macedonian in Greece. There is a small minority of Macedonian speakers in south-eastern Albania.
